ENG: Nowadays, heterogeneity has emerged as one of the key development points for achieving the so-called exascale domain in high-performance computing. This need is mainly driven by the amount of aggregated data that needs to be processed, mostly due to the Big Data paradigm and Brain-Inspired Computing. Unlike fully customized accelerators, customizable accelerators in heterogeneous systems offer a balance between performance and energy efficiency, as well as the ability to adapt to more than one application domain. However, current programming models are typically based on the imperative programming paradigm, which inefficiently exploits heterogeneity and parallelism.
This talk presents an alternative approach to programming heterogeneous systems by introducing a model that allows the programmer to express what is being computed, rather than how the computation is executed. To deliver such a model, the use of Domain-specific languages for expressing computations and optimizations is proposed, namely RISE for the expression of computation, and ELEVATE for the expression of optimization strategies. As a concrete showcase, the use of the proposed languages and the paired compiler (Shine) is demonstrated on the GAP8 heterogeneous platform.
